Name: Comments: | STG3 Gary Davis - Email - 8/4/2007 I came aboard the Joey in the middle of the Indian Ocean deployment in Feb of '75 (STGSN then) at Bahrain, served with a great bunch of folk. Looking over the crew roster brought back a lot of memories of people and places, things long ago consigned to memory and pigeon-holed with the other events from a long-ago youth. Brought a smile to my face and a tug at my heart.
I recently bought a new house and in the process of packing up to move I found boxes of pictures and other stuff (my Shellback certificate from May 29, 1975...paid dearly for that but wouldn't trade it for anything) that had been stored for many years and never touched. Those too brought back a lot of memories.
Just wanted to check in & say hi to all my fellow Hewes crewmates and wish you all the best of luck, I'll be checking back from time to time,
Fsivo vam dobrava, menya druzhnee. |
Name: Comments: | EW2 Peter Ferris - Email - 8/2/2007 Steaming on the Joey were some of the best of times. Oh, all the great people, places, and the memories I hold so dear. Thanks to you all that have touched and guided my life. |
Name: Comments: | SM3 John A. Reitano - Email - 8/2/2007 Great time at'07 reunion Milwaukee!! Thanks to Dave Suminski. Now I know what Navy wives and girlfriends felt like when the Joey left port, and they were left at the pier!!?? The '07 reunion crew know what I'm talkin' 'bout...

Name: Comments: | MM1 Wallace Simpson - Email - 7/31/2007 Assigned to A-GANG one of the best bunch of pirates and swabs that has been my pleasure to have been onboard any ship with. This group could and did accomplish the most difficult task. Like taking the after capstan motor down from the overhead using only a wire strap, or being the only division certified ready for PEB by desron 21. Some may wish to forget but it is a pleasure to remember each one of these swabs as the best bunch of liberty hounds that ever crossed the quarter deck. |
Name: Comments: | DK2 Wayne Williams - Email - 7/30/2007 I came on board the Joey a few days before the WestPac cruise. Also did the Med and Indian Ocean cruises on board. For those of you who remember me, I wanted to say Hi. For those of you who don't remember me, I was the chubby guy with the beard that paid you on payday. Serving on board was some of the best times of my life and also some of the worst. I partied pretty much my entire tour aboard so some of it is pretty hazy now. I do remember that I was a pain in the butt to the brass every chance I got. I can remember being thrown out of the Captain's cabin just about every payday when I went to pay him at sea, for being out of uniform. (I'm pretty sure it was Klee, but I might be wrong) I always wore my black Converse (Chucks) low cuts which the Captain didn't particularly care for. I have plenty of great memories that I will try to put on the Sea Stories page later. Drop me an e-mail if you remember me. To all who served aboard the Hewes I salute you!! |
Name: Comments: | STG1 Roger Truitt - Email - 7/30/2007 Googled the Joey boat during a slow period at work. Ed Peters how are you doing? I vacationed in Bryson City NC in June. I was thinking about you as I drove thru Waynesville.
Ken Hanks what are you up to in Singapore! Are you fluent in chinese yet? |
Name: Comments: | OS2 Thomas Oshgan - Email - 7/29/2007 I would like to thank all of my shipmates who attended the 2007 Reunion for making it a very memorable event. It's hard to explain what a wonderful feeling it is to see my old friends. It's been 33 years since I saw any of them, yet, despite our ages, we remembered the past in such vivid detail. To all of you who attended, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES. I will never forget this reunion and hope to attend more in the future. The hardest part of the reunion was saying good-bye. |

Name: Comments: | EM2 Kevin Engel - Email - 6/14/2006 This is a great site. I was on The Joey Boat from 92-94, and I have very fond memories of her. If anyone knows where EMC Tamez or (then) LTJG Chow are shoot me an e-mail. |

Thanks Bill and I'll call this weekend dog. |

Name: Comments: | SK3 Kevin J. Boyce - Email - 2/18/2006 WOW!! This feels like an eternity ago when I was on the J.Hewes..alot of mixed memories. I will never forget standing shoring watch in the foward paint locker in 3ft of paint/water, only in the NAVY!! Med/IO was a blast.. wish I still had pics. From what I can remember the J.Hewes/Charleston took me in as a punk 18 y.o and made me a cynical/punk 22 y.o. Honestly.. It was great to stumble upon this site, alot of great stories and some great friends. I read that the J.Hewes was sold for $$$$2.8 m..is that all?? I think we spent more then that on p-way wax. The more I type the names are coming back.. Nice to see SKCS Petrey(best Chief on the ship, your presence/leadership was missed), OS3 Santiago(SSDF school was crazy), PN2 Podiac(always kept in-port watch full of laughs) and where ever you may be EM3 Knight, MS3 Lester, MM3 Yates, GMG2 Barnes, DC3 Cistunk, DC3 Klimko, STGSN Killian, SMSN Radkie (I hope the ranks are right, there were a few "incidents" driving on Dorchester if I remember) and..whoever else I forgot.... Name: Comments: | BT3 John Crego - Email - 10/20/2005 Hey all, just figured it was high time I updated my email. It's great to drop in now and then and see who have found this Joey Boat site. What a trip. I have a niece in the Navy now. She's nuke. She'll probably make it a career. Like her uncle should have. Oh well. I was young and stupid. Now I'm old and stupid. And I'm told there is no such rate as a BT anymore. We BT's are obsolete. Couldn't have happened about (can't believe I'm saying this) thirty years ago when I was one. Oh well. |

I contacted a friend from my days onboard and she told me about your website. I'm very impressed by the website and all the former shipmates names and e-mail addresses that you have managed to compile. Thank you for this great resource. Although I spent a short time on
the ship, my experience onboard was very rewarding and the scene of
some my fondest memories of the Navy. |

Name: Comments: | ET2 Kevin York - Email - 1/6/2005 WOW...there probably isnt a day that goes by that I dont think of the Joseph Hewes and working on the SPS-40 air search radar, SPS-10 Surface search Radar, or the SRN-15 Tacan Beacon Transponder, moreso the guys I worked with and served with ...Most of the memories bring smiles to my face.. others have me looking for a shot glass...lol.. If I had a dollar for every coat of wax we had to put down in the p-way. IMPORTANT NOTE to the future designers of the ships: Never Put OE Division adject to "Officers Country". Thanks to all the officers who heeded the Shout "Stay to your right!...GRRRR...DAMMIT...thats a nice new step in the fresh wax". However, it was if they busted their ass.. What can I say, ET's had a sick sense of humor...lol. And those memories and attention to detail to "keep a straight face without laughing" until they left is still priceless today. Served with a bunch of great guys, especially the ET's I worked with during the course of my "4 yr 6 month 10 day" tenure on the Joey Boat. Wanted to give a shout out to them: ETC BAX, ET1 Medford, ET2 Rath, ET2 Melvin, ET2 Kwiek, ET2 Jacobs, ETC Hernandez, ET1 Zeeger, ET2 Long, ET3 Hornberger, ET3 Hall, ET3 Newell, ET3 Brown...alot of others that I just dont recall off the top of my Head. You guys kept it real but you kept it fun even in the shittiest of times. Thanks to ET1 Donald Long for telling me about the Website. |
Name: Comments: | HT2 Tim Harn - Email - 1/6/2005 Hello! to all former crew members. I spoke with Jeff Sams (EM3), hes said there was a website so I thought I would check it out. My deepest sympathy to the family of Barney Pape. I do remember him and he was a genuine good man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I saw several other names that I recognize. It brought back alot of memories, what a great time we had, no matter how much B.S. or time underway. The 83 MED the Caribbean and the 85 UNITAS was the time of my life. Take care all and good-bye from Iowa! |
Name: Comments: | FC2(SW) Dean VanDrese - Email - 1/5/2005 It's great to check in from time to time. Read about the memories of others and remember some of my own. Anyone know what happened to Jack Alberts? Like to say hey to the 2nd Division that I knew when I was onboard. I often think of my time aboard the hewes and it never fails to bring a smile on my face. I'm sorry to hear about Barney. He was a great guy. Everyone take care and I will be back soon. Name: Comments: | LT Mike Strunk - Email - 12/26/2004 Just wanted to update my email address and supply a bit of gossip. Recently I was in Memphis Tn on business and got to have dinner with Dan Holloway. Dan was a JO on the Hewes in the late 70's and early 80's. He is now the head Surface Warfare detailer for the Navy and rumor has it that he is on the list for Admiral. I'm not sure , but he could be the first Admiral that served on the Hewes. Anyway, when it becomes official, congratulations would certainly be in order. I don't have his email address, but he's stationed at the Naval Air Station in Bartlet, Tn. Great website. Keep up the good work. |

Name: Comments: | GMC Steve Cobb - Email - 12/4/2004 Was onboard from late 80s to early 90s even went from Charleston to Texas with the Hewes. Just wanted to say hello to all. |
Name: Comments: | LT Joe Coppa - Email - 12/3/2004 I recently found my cruise books from the '83 Med and '86 UNITAS deployments. What memories! Without a doubt, the people I served with onboard the Hewes were the best I have ever run across. It was a privilege serving with them; they made what seemed unbearable bearable, if not fun! I left active duty after my time on the Hewes, I have nothing to compare it with but I suspect the brutal schedule during the early '80s was NOT typical. But somehow the crew turned it into the experience of a lifetime. I wonder if anybody else feels the same..... |
Name: Comments: | LT Todd Brown - Email - 11/27/2004 Glad to see that our ship has a website on which everyone can stay in touch ... it's amazing how, as time passes, the good times far outweigh the not-so- good times from our years onbd the Joey Boat ... fondly recall now my days onbd her, as A-Gang Divo, then M Divo, then B Divo, and finally as MPA ... Med/IO '89 ... good times, good friends ... thanks for the great website, hope to hear from some old shipmates as your time permits ... all the best ... |

Name: Comments: | SM3 Brian Ward - Email - 11/25/2004 Just checking in. Wanting to wish all "The Crew" of the Joey a wonderful holiday season. I still live in the Keystone state and would love to hear from any of you! |
Name: Comments: | EN2 Thomas Phipps - Email - 11/23/2004 Hi you guys. It has been a long time. I hope you are all healthy. I was a bit surprised to happen onto this website and see the group photo with my crew on the photo page. Lower front...Chuck Carlson, Pat Congdon, Me, Glenn Ulrich...some guy flipping the bird. Its been 30 years, but some things remain the same. The girl I met with two weeks to go on the Joey is still my wife and best friend. I still own the Austin Healey Sprite I drove, and had trouble getting base stickers on 'cause the turn signals kept shorting out. I have two grown daughters, one at Evergreen State College in Olympia and the other an RN at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma. Being an Engineman in A Gang and before that on a Tender taught me that anything can be figured out. After leaving the navy, I built my house, and several large boats, and then spent the past 22 years as a firefighter. And something else will follow soon.
I have always been thankful for the guidance of Lt. Mastin, and Lt. Washington for being so patient with me and the others. I know for a fact that we tested their patience. Their patience held, and I have tried to remember that when dealing with the steady stream of young firefighters. There are some names I didn't see in the rosters besides my own, Rich Jamula for one, and Mark Johnson of Three Rivers, Mass. I'll let them know about this site. Bobby Hall!!!I want my binoculars back-you can keep the John Denver Casette you ran off with. Maine Hillbilly.
Oh, and no matter how messed up the planet gets, I'm pretty sure they will never trust us in uniform again, so breathe easy.
That is all. Tom. |
Name: Comments: | RM3 Larry Arszman - Email - 11/8/2004 "CLIFF NOTE" version....I just found this site...It was interesting looking through all the links...brought back good memories. Name: Comments: | FA Norman D. Penderson - Email - 7/28/2004 It was a pleasure to serve. |
Name: Comments: | LCDR Carl Morrison - Email - 7/22/2004 I served onboard Joseph Hewes as Engineer Officer. It was a rewarding tour as I definitely learned everyday. I met the ship overseas in Palma during the 1983 Med deployment. I was onboard when the Marines were killed in Lebanon and Hewes was in a fire suport station, at GQ, but with no targets to shoot. I left the ship the day before she left for the Unitas cruise, for which I have been forever sad.
I retired from the Navy in 1991 and now teach 8th grade science in Yorktown, Va. |
Name: Comments: | DK2 Mark Klee - Email - 7/20/2004 Wow, great website. Nice to hear from all of you. Spent a couple of days with John Allyn (OS2) in Indiana a few months back and he showed me this website. And we did talk about you OSC Purvis.... and many of our other shipmates.
John said we had a great softball team but I told them it must of happened after I left the team.
I am still looking to hear from DKC Danny Cobarabia (sorry about the spellin Dan). And DK1 Wooten. I would love to hear from ya all. |

Name: Comments: | EM2 Tim Clark - Email - 7/17/2004 The Joey Boat was my last command I served on but it was good times, steel beach parties and Flight Quarter In the MED. Has anyone heard from HT1 Mitch Jacobs? I know he went to College and became a preacher. This is a great site. |
Name: Comments: | MM3 Paul G. Walde - Email - 7/16/2004 Hi Guys (too many to mention by name), wish I had been able to make the 04 reunion, but still remember Dallas/Ft Worth with fond memories. Planning on going to 05. Anyway, I think I found Lt. Baldwin from PreComm crew but can't email him. Does anyone have a "Gold" membership in classmates.com I got an email from them letting me know there were 27 new people signed in at various schools, etc (including Joey boat) Well his name just popped up at the classmates.com USS Joseph Hewes list. If someone with a gold membership could go there and email him to point him in the right(ous) direction to our humble site maybe we can get him into the fold and join us in 05 in FL |
Name: Comments: | HTFN Glenn F. Ulrich - Email - 7/6/2004 Just another look back onto this list to see who else has signed on. Where did you guys get info on the 2004 reunion? PLEASE add me to either the email or snail mail list for 2005, I would have gone to Charleston if I'd had the information! |
Name: Comments: | RM2 Frank Hall - Email - 7/4/2004 This is a great site. My grandson was asking about ships like the Midway and I told him about the Joey Hewes. Then we did a search and found this site. Good job!
I was a Radioman on the Hewes on our around the world cruise to Nam and other exciting places in 1972 and with the assistance and permission of Captain Ward was able to start a ships news/sports show which we did every day while deployed. |
Name: Comments: | BT1 Frank A. Johnson - Email - 7/4/2004 Just checking back in, was looking for any info on Buddy Norton. Wonder if the old goat is still kicking. Took a trip to Charleston last year, and the place has really changed. Looking forward to hearing from any BT's from 1990-Decom. Would like to see some of you guys at the next reunion, when ever that may be. |
Name: Comments: | OS2 Jeff Adkins - Email - 7/1/2004 Checkin' in again! Hi shipmates! I still have not been able to find OS2 Clarence Purvis or OS2 William Ray Gardner III. I have heard from a bunch of you too! This is a great web site! Some of the best friends I ever had were my shipmates on the Joey. |
Name: Comments: | SM3 John A. Reitano - Email - 7/1/2004 Hi mates, My email is still the same. Just wanted to connect and tell you I'm interested in '05 reunion. I was at '03 in Dallas-Ft Worth, great time. I have stayed in touch with "WILLY" Al Wilson and we found Steve Laidlaw in San Jose Calif. Wish we could connect with Jefferson and Doxie, and Billy Irving. How about Ron Wilson the 1st class signalman? Hey to all the groupe that made it to the 1st reunion...Bob(Mike)Miller,Paul Walde(roomie),Griff and Mrs. Griff, "duck", t-ball, Summerhill, Holmgreen, etc.etc.
Hope to see more at the next one. |

Name: Comments: | MM3 Dave Brown - Email - 6/20/2004 I am Dave Brown MM3 type from 90-92. I spotted my name on the not heard from list so I figure I better check in. I am a civilian now but since I had the misfortune of staying reserves I am now a BM1 and have been recalled to Kuwait for the last 4 months. I really enjoy your site and you have done a great job, and provide a great service. It sure beats listing on classmates.com military (Alot of people there too). Anyways thanks for your help in finding some friends. |
Name: Comments: | TM3 James Meskill - Email - 6/16/2004 I was on board when the ship moved from SC --> TX then onto CA. I always had a hanger deck full of Cubans, outside of my Mag.

Name: Comments: | GMGSN Andy J. Wood - Email - 6/16/2004 Just returned from the "Joey Reunion 04"(I've been able to be at both). This year we were in Charleston, SC. It was great seeing our old shipmates. Larry 'Duck' Chechak was our host and what an awesome job he did. We were able to go aboard the USS Yorktown and release a wreath to our shipmates who have made it to the final Port-of-Call and it touched us all. We salute you Larry and thanks again for the wonderful time we all had.
Looks like I drew the short straw for hosting "Joey Reunion 05". We are looking at Panama City Beach, FL it should be great. Contact me if you would like to be there.

I landed in Hawaii on another can, the "Ouellet" FF-1077, can you believe it?! I finally made a westpac! I'll never forget the guys aon the Hewes tho' you helped me grow and become a man! |

Name: Comments: | BT1 Bob Patterson - Email - 3/31/2004 Outstanding job on the website. I really enjoyed going through the names and recalling faces. Please add me to the "found" muster list. I was on the Joey Boat from 1981 to 1986, leaving as a BT1. I have a few other names that are not on the missing muster and will be happy to forward them to you. Name: Comments: | QMSN Dina Faust - Email - 3/24/2004 Being on the Hewes was one of the best times of my life. I walked away with sense of accomplishment (well actually my daughter is really my accomplishment..haha) but my time on board really made a difference in my life. Let alone the great friends I still have from my time on board. Lynn Chow (still active, now a LT Commander) and I commented how time has flown by, this year will be 10 years that the ship has been decommissioned. So much has happened since then. If anyone ever gets to Houston look me up. My last name is now Connolly. And if anyone knows where QM1 Burgess is, please let me know!!! |

Name: Comments: | STG3 Derrick A. Suddreth - Email - 2/18/2004 Why does Chippy Frantz not have an e-mail address? Do they not have computers and the internet in Heber Springs, Ark. yet? Hate I missed the reunion... I just found the website today. Sure do miss all y'all. I'm living in Rock Hill, South Cackalaki as you read this. That's upstate SC for all you Yankees, just below Charlotte in "the old north state". In fact, I'm so close to NC, I can almost spit 'backer juice 'cross the state line. Somebody e-mail or call or write or sumpin' afore I go wackers, ya hear?
And speakin' of hearin, I damn near lost most of it in my right ear at a Ted Nugent concert in the early 80's. Alright, it was really industrial noise exposure in a truck factory that caused it, but the first story sounded better, right? Kinda' ironic considering I was a Sonar Tech, huh?Why does Chippy Frantz not have an e-mail address? Do they not have computers and the internet in Heber Springs, Ark. yet? Name: Comments: | BM1 Timothy Stacey - Email - 1/12/2004 I only got to visit the Hewes one time as a reservist but I really enjoyed my time aboard. I spent my entire active duty time(1976-1980) riding "tin cans." I wouldn't trade them for any other. The crew is always closer because it is small and the liberty ports......oh the liberty ports! |

Name: Comments: | FTG2 Rodney Knuth - Email - 11/19/2003 Hey, I heard about this website from; I think everybody's friend (Larry (Duck) Chechak). Definately have some good memories of the Joey Boat. I remember our "Nam" cruise that started out as a "Med cruise" then ended as a round the world cruise, and yes let us trusty shellbacks rise. And yes swim call will always have a special meaning to me. And speaking of special meaning how about Gordon Lightfoot's song "Sundown" performed on the ships close-circuit TV by one of our barely talented sonar techs. Well, I could go on and on but I'll stop for now. |
